The Problem
B2B challenges we solve on 1688
1688 is a domestic Chinese wholesale marketplace with its own conventions, its own buyer behaviour and its own pace. Twelve problems below, and foreign-owned suppliers usually have ten of them.
Run like a retail listing
Consumer product pages uploaded to a marketplace where buyers are comparing factories, MOQs and tier pricing.
Wangwang left unanswered
Buyers messaging six suppliers at once and hearing back from four before you open the client.
No tiered pricing logic
A single unit price where buyers expect price breaks at 50, 200 and 1,000 units, so nobody engages.
No Chengxintong credibility
No verified membership, no transaction history and no trade assurance, so serious buyers never shortlist you.
Listings written in translated English
Machine-translated titles and descriptions that read wrong to domestic buyers and match no real search behaviour.
Incomplete product attributes
Category fields left blank, so products never appear in the filtered search domestic buyers rely on.
Invisible in 1688 search
Keyword coverage built from how you describe the product rather than how a Chinese purchasing agent searches for it.
Wangxiaobao spent blind
Budget on broad category terms generating inquiries from buyers well below your minimum order.
No one-piece dropship option
Ignoring the yijian daifa buyers who become your highest-volume repeat accounts a year later.
Slow sample turnaround
Sample requests treated as an interruption rather than the first step of a wholesale relationship.
No pipeline visibility
Traffic reported, with no view of inquiries, samples, first orders or repeat rate.
Owned by nobody
The account treated as an admin task rather than a sales channel, so response times and listing quality drift.
What We Do
Our 1688 services
Eight services covering the whole account. On a domestic wholesale marketplace, response speed and pricing structure carry more weight than anything else, so that is where the emphasis sits.
01
Day-to-day account operations, storefront upkeep, membership status and the weekly rhythm behind them.
02
Wholesale Catalog Management
Product creation, attributes, MOQ and tiered price-break structure across the full range.
03
Keyword research from domestic purchasing behaviour, plus listing and attribute optimization.
04
Keyword advertising structured by product line, buyer intent and the order sizes you can serve.
05
Inquiry & Wangwang Management
Response coverage, quotation templates, sample handling and follow-up cadence.
06
Product photography, specification graphics, factory imagery and storefront creative.
07
Dropship & Distribution Setup
One-piece dropshipping configuration and the distributor programme built around it.
08
Business Advisor analysis, inquiry-to-order tracking and cost per qualified lead by product line.
Selling to international buyers rather than domestic Chinese ones? That is a different platform — see Alibaba.com, Made-in-China, or all platforms we support.
Profile
Supplier storefront & account management
Your storefront is the shortlisting document. A purchasing agent comparing six suppliers reads it before your product page and decides from it whether you are worth a Wangwang message.
- Company profile build-out — capability, scale, history and specialisation
- Chengxintong membership status maintained and presented properly
- Certifications, test reports and compliance documentation surfaced where buyers look
- Factory, production line and quality-control imagery kept current
- Storefront layout, product grouping and featured product selection
- Company introduction written for a domestic purchasing audience
- Trade capability detail — capacity, lead times, sample policy and terms
- Membership tier and showcase allocation reviewed against search competition
- Response rate, transaction history and rating monitored as credibility signals
Same operating discipline as our eCommerce management service, applied to a domestic B2B supplier account.
Catalog
Wholesale catalog & tiered pricing
On 1688 the price ladder is the product page. Buyers filter on MOQ, tier breaks and delivery terms long before they read your description, so the commercial structure matters more than the copy.
Buyer Research
- Domestic keyword research per product line
- Competitor supplier and price-ladder benchmarking
- Category and attribute requirement mapping
Listing Content
- Titles built to how purchasing agents actually search
- Full specification tables in native Chinese
- Customisation, OEM and ODM capability stated clearly
- Certification and compliance detail per product
Commercial Structure
- MOQ set from real production economics
- Tiered price breaks structured to move order sizes up
- Sample policy, lead times and packaging detail
- One-piece dropshipping enabled where it fits
Optimization
- Information completeness tracked product by product
- Search visibility by keyword and product line
- Inquiry rate per product rather than conversion rate
- Continuous updates on a documented cycle
The useful metric here is inquiries per product, not orders per visit. A product with traffic and no inquiries almost always has an MOQ or a first tier that filters out its own audience.
Organic
1688 search visibility
1688 search weighs keyword relevance, information completeness, transaction history, price competitiveness and response performance together. Keyword work alone addresses one of five, and it has to be done in Chinese.
- Keyword research from domestic purchasing search behaviour
- Product title optimization within character limits and for scan-reading
- Attribute completeness, which drives the filtered search buyers rely on
- Category placement and product grouping
- Specification depth as a relevance and quality input
- Price competitiveness and tier structure as ranking evidence
- Supplier credibility inputs — membership, history and response rate
- Competitor supplier visibility and positioning analysis
- Ongoing optimization cycles rather than a one-off listing rewrite
Marketplace search and web search are different disciplines. Our web methodology is on the eCommerce SEO page.
Paid
Wangxiaobao advertising & buyer acquisition
Paid placement on 1688 buys inquiries, not orders. That changes how it should be structured, measured and excluded — the goal is fewer, better-qualified conversations rather than more clicks.
- Keyword advertising structured by product line and buyer intent
- Showcase and featured placement allocated to products that convert to inquiries
- Negative and exclusion discipline against sub-MOQ and out-of-scope terms
- Bid management by keyword competitiveness and lead value
- Budget weighted toward the buyer types you can serve profitably
- Landing product selection so the ad and the price ladder match intent
- Search-term analysis reviewed weekly against inquiry quality, not click volume
- Advertising measured on cost per qualified inquiry and cost per won account
- Interaction between paid placement and organic visibility managed deliberately
Our wider paid media methodology sits on the PPC & paid advertising page.
Pipeline
Inquiry, sample & order management
This is where 1688 revenue is actually won or lost. The funnel runs from visibility to a repeat wholesale account through people and samples, not through a checkout.
Visibility
Wangwang inquiry
Sample order
First wholesale order
Repeat account
Response Coverage
- Wangwang staffed against Chinese business hours
- First-reply templates that answer rather than greet
- Response rate protected because it feeds visibility
Quotation Quality
- Structured quotes with tier pricing and lead times
- Sample terms, packaging and shipping stated up front
- Capability evidence attached rather than promised
Sample to First Order
- Sample turnaround treated as a sales step, not a cost
- Defined follow-up cadence after a sample ships
- Objection handling on price, MOQ and lead time
Account Development
- Every inquiry tracked through to order and outcome
- Repeat-order prompts and distributor conversion
- Win and loss reasons recorded and fed back into listings
Most suppliers can double their 1688 results without touching visibility at all — simply by answering faster, quoting properly and following up after the sample ships.

Buyers
Buyer segments & distribution strategy
1688 serves several buyer types with completely different economics — retail resellers taking one piece at a time, regional distributors, factories buying components, and cross-border sellers stocking overseas storefronts. Deciding which you want changes your pricing, your MOQ and your content.
Segment choice
Price ladder
Content fit
Acquisition
Sample cycle
Repeat account
Buyer Segmentation
- Retail resellers and one-piece dropshippers as a volume entry point
- Regional distributors and wholesalers as the repeat-revenue core
- Factories and OEM buyers sourcing components or white-label stock
Pricing Architecture
- Tier breaks placed where they move buyers up rather than reward them for staying small
- MOQ set per segment rather than one number across the catalog
- Sample and trial pricing designed to open accounts, not to break even
Dropship & Distribution
- One-piece dropshipping configured properly where the margin supports it
- Distributor terms, protected pricing and territory considerations
- Fulfilment and packaging expectations set per buyer type
Cross-Border Buyers
- Overseas sellers sourcing stock for Amazon, Shopee and their own stores
- Export documentation, consolidation and freight-forwarder coordination
- The bridge to Alibaba.com where international buyers belong
A supplier who wins with one-piece dropshippers and one who wins with regional distributors rarely have the same price ladder, the same MOQ or the same storefront. Choosing the segment is the decision everything else follows from.
Health
B2B marketplace performance
The monitoring layer. On 1688 the metrics that matter sit in the pipeline rather than in the storefront, and response performance feeds back into visibility.
- Wangwang response rate and response time monitored against platform expectations
- Inquiry volume and quality tracked by product line and buyer segment
- Sample requests, conversion to first order and time between the two
- Repeat order rate and account value over time
- Product information completeness and listing status monitoring
- Search visibility and keyword position tracking by product line
- Advertising performance measured on cost per qualified inquiry
- Buyer ratings, dispute rate and transaction history
- Pipeline reporting by stage rather than a traffic dashboard
How It Works
Our 1688 growth process
Six steps. The pipeline sits underneath all of them, because on this platform visibility only matters if the inquiry it produces gets answered quickly and properly.
01
Audit
Storefront, membership status, catalog, price ladder, search visibility, advertising, response times and inquiry-to-order conversion reviewed together. You keep the document either way.
02
Research
Domestic keyword research, competitor price-ladder benchmarking, and buyer-segment analysis against what you can actually produce and ship.
03
Build the Strategy
A twelve-month plan covering storefront, catalog, pricing architecture, search, advertising and inquiry handling, with named owners and stage targets.
04
Optimize & Implement
Storefront, catalog and price ladder first, because advertising into a thin profile produces inquiries that go nowhere.
05
Advertise & Acquire
Wangxiaobao structured by product line and buyer intent, with response coverage staffed before the spend starts.
06
Monitor & Scale
Pipeline monitored weekly by stage, then scaling — more product lines, a distributor programme, or a higher membership tier where the numbers justify it.
The single highest-return fix on most 1688 accounts is response time. Buyers shortlist from who replies first with something useful, long before they compare on price.

Buyer segments
What is 1688 and how is it different from Alibaba.com?
They are both Alibaba Group marketplaces, but they serve opposite ends of the same trade. 1688.com is the domestic Chinese wholesale marketplace — Chinese suppliers selling to Chinese buyers, in Chinese, priced in RMB, with domestic logistics. Alibaba.com is the export platform, aimed at international buyers, in English, with export documentation and freight built into the process. Suppliers frequently run both, but the listings, pricing, content and buyer expectations are genuinely different on each.
Can we sell on 1688 as a foreign company?
It is considerably harder than Alibaba.com. A domestic Chinese business entity, a Chinese bank account and Chinese-language operations are effectively required for a full supplier account, and Chengxintong verification assumes a domestic registration. Many overseas brands work through a Chinese entity, a partner or an agent instead. We will assess your situation honestly before recommending it — for some clients the right answer is Alibaba.com or Made-in-China rather than 1688.
Do you help with sourcing from 1688 as well as selling on it?
Yes. A lot of the brands we work with use 1688 as a supply source rather than a sales channel — finding manufacturers, comparing price ladders, arranging samples and coordinating consolidation and freight. That is a different engagement from supplier-side management, and we scope it separately. Tell us which side of the marketplace you are on and we will price accordingly.
How important is Wangwang response time?
It is the single most important operational metric on the platform. Chinese buyers message several suppliers at once and start shortlisting from whoever replies first with real information. Minutes matter, and response rate is also a visibility input, so slow replies cost you twice. We normally staff coverage against Chinese business hours before touching anything else.
How should tiered pricing be structured?
From your production economics, then designed to move buyers up rather than to reward them for staying small. A ladder with breaks at 50, 200 and 1,000 units gives a buyer a reason to increase the order; a single price gives them a reason to negotiate. We model it per product line and present it visually on the listing so buyers self-qualify before they message you.
Is one-piece dropshipping worth enabling?
Often, yes — if the packaging and margin support it. Yijian daifa buyers look small and unprofitable individually, but a meaningful share of them become regional distributors within a year, and they cost almost nothing to acquire once the listing exists. We model it rather than assume it, and it usually runs as a separate listing rather than a discount on the main one.
Do we need Chengxintong membership?
For a serious supplier account, effectively yes. It carries the verification and transaction history that domestic buyers use to filter out risk, and without it you are competing on price alone against suppliers who have it. We look at your actual search competition and pipeline before recommending a tier, rather than treating the upgrade as automatic.
Who owns the 1688 account?
You do, always. We work under our own sub-account permissions inside your account. If the relationship ends, we remove our access and everything — storefront, catalog, content, campaigns, documentation — stays with you.
Find out why your 1688 inquiries are not becoming orders
Book a 1688 audit. We will review your storefront, catalog, price ladder, search visibility, advertising, response times and inquiry-to-order conversion, and tell you which two things to fix first — whether or not you hire us.
