The Problem
Squarespace challenges we solve
Squarespace makes beautiful sites easy and profitable stores hard, because the commercial work sits outside the design tools. Twelve problems below, and almost every store we inherit has six of them.
Designed, not merchandised
A gorgeous template with no merchandising logic — no bundles, no cross-sells, no reason to add a second item.
Thin SEO foundations
Default URL structure, missing metadata, no structured data and category pages that were never written for search.
Heavy pages
Full-bleed video, uncompressed gallery blocks and four fonts, then surprise at the mobile bounce rate.
Fluid Engine used desktop-first
Layouts composed on the wide breakpoint and squashed into mobile afterwards, where most of the traffic sits.
No filtering or search
Category pages that scroll forever because product filtering was never configured or coded.
Checkout left at defaults
Express payments off, shipping revealed late and no abandoned-checkout recovery running.
Email treated as a newsletter
Squarespace Email Campaigns used for occasional broadcasts, with no flows behind the store at all.
Custom code avoided
Requirements dropped as impossible when code injection or a Developer Platform build would handle them.
Analytics not configured
Squarespace Analytics read in isolation, no GA4 events, no ad platform conversion tracking that reconciles.
Catalog outgrowing the setup
Product variants, options and inventory managed manually well past the point it should have been systematised.
No one owns revenue
A design studio built it, nobody runs it, and performance is discussed only when sales drop.
Replatforming as a reflex
A move to Shopify proposed annually instead of fixing the three things actually holding the store back.

Operations
Squarespace store management
The unglamorous work that decides whether everything else compounds. Run weekly, documented, and visible to you in a shared board.
Products & Catalog
- Product updates, new launches and end-of-life handling
- Categories, tags and product variants kept consistent
- Merchandising — featured products, bundles, cross-sells and badging
- Catalog organization, naming standards and inventory rules
Store Operations
- Store settings, shipping rules, tax and payment configuration
- Discounts, gift cards and promotional campaigns
- Content updates — pages, banners, navigation and announcement bar
Optimization
- Store health — broken links, 301 redirects and out-of-stock handling
- Performance monitoring against Core Web Vitals and image weight
- Continuous improvements shipped in a prioritised weekly queue
Reporting
- Sales by category, product and channel with period comparison
- Store performance — conversion rate, AOV, sessions and repeat rate
- Growth opportunities flagged with an estimated size and effort
This is the same operating model described on our eCommerce management page, applied specifically to Squarespace.
Growth Model
Squarespace marketing & growth
Three lanes, three outcomes. Most Squarespace stores run one of them well and treat the other two as someone else’s problem, which is why growth stalls.
SEO
Google Ads
Meta Ads
Content
Traffic
Qualified sessions from people with commercial intent, at a cost you can defend against contribution margin rather than revenue.
CRO
Mobile UX

Conversion
More of that traffic buying, from research-led changes to navigation, product pages, cart and checkout — tested, not guessed.
SMS
Retention
Repeat Revenue
Second and third orders that arrive without paying for the click again, which is what makes the first lane affordable.
Full detail on each lane lives on eCommerce marketing, CRO and email & retention.
Build
Squarespace development & technology
Development planned around what the store has to do commercially, by the team that has to market it afterwards. The native feature set goes further than most studios use, and code injection covers the rest.
Ten areas we work in on Squarespace. Migrations and Developer Platform work are scoped separately because they carry risk that a monthly retainer should not absorb.
- Squarespace 7.1 store development — new builds from scoping to launch
- Template and Fluid Engine customization, mobile breakpoint composed first
- Store redesign with the existing conversion data as the brief
- Migrations to Squarespace from WordPress, Wix and hosted builders
- Custom code injection for functionality the native blocks do not cover
- Product filtering, search and category logic beyond the default catalog
- Extensions and third-party integrations — selection, setup and the audit that removes two
- API and Developer Platform work for ERP, 3PL, CRM and subscription systems
- Performance optimization against Core Web Vitals and real device data
- Technical maintenance, monitoring and a release routine that catches regressions
The full engineering process, stack and QA approach is on our eCommerce development & technology page.
Conversion
Squarespace CRO & customer experience
Every step below leaks. We find which one leaks most for your store before touching anything, because the biggest win is rarely where people expect it.
Homepage
Category
Product
Cart
Checkout
Purchase
Discovery
- Navigation and menu structure
- Product discovery, search and filtering
- Category page layout and sort logic
Product
- Product page structure and content order
- Imagery, variant selection and stock messaging
- Trust elements — reviews, guarantees, delivery promise
Mobile & Cart
- Mobile UX, tap targets and sticky add-to-cart
- Cart experience and continue-shopping path
- Upsells and cross-sells that do not interrupt
Checkout & Testing
- Express payments, shipping transparency and checkout friction
- A/B testing with a stated hypothesis and stop rule
- Post-test rollout, monitoring and documentation
Design-led stores usually convert worst on the product page, where the styling wins and the information does not. Our full method is on the CRO page.
Stack
Squarespace extensions & integrations
Organised by what each tool is actually for. Squarespace has a smaller ecosystem than Shopify, which makes choosing well matter more.
Marketing
- Email and SMS
- Reviews and user content
- Loyalty and referrals
Analytics
- Tracking and event setup
- Reporting dashboards
- Attribution and consent
Operations
- Inventory sync
- Shipping and rates
- Fulfilment and returns
Customer Experience
- Site search and filtering
- Personalisation
- Support and live chat
Business Systems
- CRM
- ERP
- Accounting
Where no extension exists, code injection or a Developer Platform build usually does the job for less than a monthly subscription.
How It Works
Our Squarespace growth process
Six steps. The audit is the part that changes most between stores; everything after it follows the same discipline.
01
Audit
Store, SEO, paid media, CRO, retention and technology reviewed together. You keep the document either way.
02
Identify Growth Opportunities
The three things costing you most, sized and ranked by likely revenue impact against the effort to fix them.
03
Build the Strategy
A twelve-month plan with named owners, target metrics and a sequence that fixes the store before it scales the spend.
04
Implement
Technical fixes, catalog and content first, then campaigns — so traffic lands on a store that can convert it.
05
Measure & Optimize
Weekly reporting on contribution, conversion and repeat rate, with a documented change log.
06
Scale
More channels, more SKUs, more markets — added once the current mix is genuinely working.
On Squarespace specifically, URL structure and product page content are almost always the first two fixes, and both are free to make.
Fit
Squarespace services by business goal
Start from the outcome you need this quarter. Most stores need two of these, not eight.

FAQs
Squarespace FAQs
Eight questions that come up in most Squarespace conversations. More on our full FAQ page.
Is Squarespace good enough to run a real store on?
For a large number of brands, yes — particularly design-led ones with a manageable catalog. It handles products, variants, inventory, shipping, tax, subscriptions and digital goods perfectly competently. Where it genuinely strains is very large catalogs, complex product configuration, wholesale pricing tiers and heavy checkout customization. We will tell you plainly if your requirements sit outside what it does well.
Can Squarespace rank in Google?
Yes, and better than its reputation suggests. You control URLs, titles, meta descriptions, redirects and image alt text, and structured data can be added through code injection. The usual problem is not the platform — it is that the site was built as a portfolio and the category and product pages were never written for search at all.
Do you build on Squarespace or only manage existing stores?
Both. We build new 7.1 stores, redesign existing ones using conversion data as the brief, and take over stores built by a design studio that has moved on. Migrations onto Squarespace are scoped as projects rather than folded into a retainer.
What can you do with custom code on Squarespace?
More than most people expect. Code injection covers structured data, custom tracking, third-party widgets, layout adjustments and behavioural changes. The Developer Platform goes further where a project justifies it. Product filtering, custom bundle logic and integrations with systems that have no native extension are the three we build most often.
Our Squarespace site is slow. Can that be fixed?
Usually, and usually without a rebuild. The common causes are uncompressed gallery images, background video, several custom fonts and a stack of third-party scripts. We audit image weight, font loading and tags, then fix in that order. Most stores get the majority of the available gain from images alone.
How much of the store do you actually run?
As much as you want. Some clients hand over the whole store — catalog, merchandising, promotions, content, campaigns and reporting. Others keep operations in-house and use us for growth only. Either way you keep the account and the ownership; we work under our own permissions inside it.
Should we move to Shopify?
Sometimes, but less often than the internet suggests. Replatforming costs money, time and rankings, and it does not fix a store whose problem is thin content and no merchandising — it just moves it. We would rather audit first and tell you whether the problem follows you. If the answer is genuinely yes, we run Shopify too and will say so.
Who owns the Squarespace account?
You do, always. We work as contributors under our own permissions inside your account. If the relationship ends, we remove our access and everything — the site, content, creative, campaigns, documentation — stays with you.
Find out what your Squarespace store is actually losing
Book a Squarespace audit. We will review the store, catalog, SEO, page speed, paid media, conversion and retention, and tell you which two things are costing you most — whether or not you hire us.
