The Complete Guide to Etsy SEO
So what is Etsy SEO, and why does the Google playbook not transfer? Etsy runs its own search engine. It ranks on things Google does not measure at all — listing quality score, shipping price, your customer service record — and it gives you thirteen tags and a 140-character title to work with. SEO for Etsy is therefore a listing craft problem far more than a keyword problem. This guide covers what Etsy search actually weighs, which of those weights you control, and where the effort pays.

Etsy ranks listings, not shops. Almost everything that moves a listing is inside the listing.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
What this guide argues, in five points
Etsy SEO is less about keywords than sellers expect and more about the things Etsy can measure about your shop. Relevance gets you into the candidate set; listing quality score, shipping price and your service record decide where in that set you land. Most sellers spend all their effort on the first part and none on the second.
- Etsy ranks listings, not shops. There is no shop-level authority to build — a strong listing on a new shop beats a weak listing on an old one.
- Your thirteen tags are the keyword surface, not the title. Tags are matched as whole phrases, so thirteen single words wastes most of the space you were given.
- Listing quality score is a ranking factor and it is behavioural: views, favourites and purchases per impression. A listing nobody clicks will not be shown, whatever its tags say.
- Shipping price and delivery speed are ranking inputs on Etsy in a way they are not on Google. Free shipping guarantees and realistic processing times move position directly.
- Etsy Ads do not improve organic rank, but the sales they generate do, because conversion feeds quality score. That is the only honest connection between the two.
Everything below is the detail behind those five points, in the order we work through them when we take over an Etsy shop.

Who this guide is for
Written for people who own the outcome on an Etsy shop, whether or not they do the work themselves.
Sellers running their own shop
You write the listings yourself and want to know which parts of Etsy SEO are real and which are sold to you by tag-generator tools.
Shops with a catalogue to maintain
You have a few hundred listings or more and need a defensible order of work rather than a list of forty recommendations applied to everything.
Brands adding Etsy as a second channel
You already sell on your own store or on Amazon and need to know why the playbook that works there does not transfer.
NOT WRITTEN FOR
People looking for a tool that does it for them. Etsy SEO tools will sell you keyword volume estimates that Etsy does not publish and cannot confirm — every number they show is modelled from a sample they will not describe. Etsy’s own Search Analytics tells you the queries your listings were actually shown for, which no third-party tool can. If you do want to compare the tools honestly, including what each one costs, we have compared six of them. The work in this guide is listing craft, photography, pricing and service, most of it done by a person who understands what they sell.

How Etsy search actually works
What is SEO on Etsy actually doing? Search runs in two stages, and almost all seller effort goes into the first one. Stage one is a relevance filter: does this listing match the query at all? Everything that survives goes into a candidate set. Stage two orders that set using signals that have nothing to do with keywords — what shoppers do with your listing, what you charge for postage, and how you have handled orders in the past. SEO on Etsy is mostly the second stage, and almost nobody works on it.
Etsy has published the broad shape of this for years. The weights are not public and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing, but the inputs are known. Here is what each one measures and how much of it is actually in your hands.
Ranking input
What Etsy is measuring
How much you control
Relevancy
Whether your title, tags, attributes and category match the query
Fully. The only stage that is pure keyword work.
Listing quality score
Views, favourites and purchases per impression, per listing
Indirectly — through photos, price and the first line of copy
Recency
A small, temporary lift when a listing is created or renewed
Fully, and worth far less than renewal advice claims
Shipping price
Whether the item qualifies for a free shipping guarantee in its market
Fully. Probably the cheapest ranking gain on this list.
Customer and market experience
Review score, completed-case history, policy and About completeness
Fully, but slowly — this one is earned, not configured
Shopper habits and location
Personalisation to the individual shopper and their market
Nothing — which is why your own searches mislead you
The weights are not published. What is clear from the inputs is that only the first row is keyword work, and most sellers spend all their time there.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Keywords get you into the candidate set. They do not decide where you sit inside it. If your listings are relevant and still invisible, the problem is in rows two to five, not in your tags.
Why you cannot trust your own Etsy searches
Etsy personalises results to the shopper: their browsing history, their favourites, their location and their market. Searching for your own keyword while logged into your own account tells you almost nothing about where a stranger sees you.
- Use Etsy Search Analytics instead. It reports the queries your listings were actually shown for, and your position in them, which no amount of manual searching will give you.
- Treat third-party tag volumes with suspicion. Etsy does not publish search volume. Every tool that shows you a number is estimating it, usually from a sample it will not describe.
- Never judge a change by searching for it yourself. Judge it on impressions and visits per listing over the following three to four weeks.
CHAPTER 02
4 min
Titles and tags: the thirteen-phrase problem
If you do one thing from this guide, do this one. Etsy gives you a 140-character title and thirteen tags of up to twenty characters each. Tags are matched as whole phrases, which means thirteen single words throws away most of the surface area you were given — and it is the single most common mistake in Etsy SEO.
A tag reading ring competes with every ring on the platform and wins nothing. A tag reading chunky silver ring competes for a phrase a real shopper types and a far smaller field. Thirteen multi-word tags give you thirteen chances at a specific query; thirteen single words give you thirteen chances at queries you will never rank for.
The title and the tags are read together, so repeating a tag verbatim in the title adds nothing. Use the title for the phrases that matter most and the tags for the variations you could not fit.

Write the title for the shopper first. A title stuffed to 140 characters converts worse, and conversion is itself a ranking input.
How to use the thirteen tags
1
Use all thirteen, every time. An unused tag is a free entry into a candidate set that you simply declined. There is no penalty for filling them and no benefit to restraint.
2
Multi-word phrases, not single words. Two to four words each. Etsy matches the phrase, so personalised dog collar is one tag, not three.
3
No duplicates, no near-duplicates. Silver ring and rings silver occupy two slots and reach the same shoppers. Spend the second slot on a different intent.
4
Mix broad and specific deliberately. Roughly three or four broad phrases, the rest long-tail. The long tail is where a new shop actually gets its first impressions.
5
Include occasion, recipient and style. Etsy demand is heavily gift-driven: gift for new mum, cottagecore wall art, groomsmen gift box. These rarely appear in product descriptions and almost always appear in searches.
One caveat that is easy to miss: the first forty characters or so of the title are what a shopper reads in the results grid, on a phone, before anything else. A title that front-loads keywords and leaves the actual product name until character ninety will rank and then fail to earn the click — which feeds straight back into quality score and undoes the ranking.
CHAPTER 03
4 min
Listing quality score, and why tags alone do not work
This is the chapter that explains the shops with immaculate tags and no traffic. Etsy measures what shoppers do with a listing after showing it to them — how often they click it, favourite it and buy it, relative to how often it appeared. A listing that is shown and ignored gets shown less.
The mechanism is self-reinforcing in both directions, which is why early performance matters more than it should. A listing that converts well from its first hundred impressions gets more impressions and converts more. A listing that does not gets quietly buried, and no amount of re-tagging rescues it if the reason for the low click rate was the photograph or the price.

The first photograph is doing more ranking work than any tag on the listing.
What feeds the quality score
Signal
What it tells Etsy
What actually moves it
Click rate from the results grid
Your photo and price are competitive for that query
The first photograph, then the price. Not the tags.
Favourites
Interest ahead of intent — often a gift being saved
A specific title and photos that show scale and detail
Conversion rate
The listing delivers what the search result promised
Shipping cost, review count, and the first three photos
Shop service record
Completed cases, late dispatch, review average
Processing times you can genuinely hit, every time
Listing age and renewal
A brief, temporary freshness lift only
Nothing worth paying for — renewing weekly is a myth
Notice that four of these six are not writing tasks. On a shop with good tags and poor traffic, the problem is almost always in this table rather than in the keywords.
Diagnosing a listing nobody clicks
1
Open Search Analytics and read impressions against visits for that listing. High impressions and low visits is a click problem, not a keyword problem — you are already being shown.
2
Replace the first photograph before touching anything else. Square, well lit, the product filling the frame, legible at thumbnail size on a phone. This is the highest-leverage change available on Etsy.
3
Check the landed price against the first page of results for your main query, shipping included. Etsy shoppers compare delivered cost, and a free shipping guarantee changes both the comparison and the ranking.
4
Only then revisit the tags — and when you do, change a few and wait three weeks. Changing all thirteen at once leaves you unable to tell which change did anything.
If you have a few hundred listings and no time to work through them one at a time, that triage is what our Etsy engagements do first.
CHAPTER 04
3 min
Photos, attributes and categories
Three parts of the listing that sellers treat as admin and Etsy treats as data. Attributes and category are structured fields the platform trusts more than your prose, and photos decide whether the impression you earned turns into a visit.
Choosing the most specific category available matters more than it looks: category determines which attribute fields you are even offered, and those attributes are how Etsy matches filtered browsing. A listing in a vague category cannot be filtered into, no matter what its tags say.

Attributes are the part of the listing most sellers leave half-filled, and the part Etsy reads most literally.
1
Pick the deepest category that genuinely fits. Not the one that feels broadest. Depth unlocks attribute fields, and attribute fields are what filtered browsing uses.
2
Fill every attribute offered, including the optional ones. Colour, material, occasion, recipient, height, width. Each one is a filter a shopper may be standing behind.
3
First photo: square, bright, product filling the frame. It is judged at thumbnail size on a phone. If it is unreadable small, nothing else in the listing gets a chance.
4
Use the full ten image slots. Scale against a known object, detail, the item in use, packaging, and variations. Listings with more images convert better, and conversion is a ranking input.
5
Add a video if the item moves, catches light or has texture. Jewellery, textiles and anything with a mechanism benefit most. Static products gain little.
6
Do not use the photo to carry text. Overlaid promotional text reads as noise at thumbnail size and dates the listing the moment the offer ends.

All ten

Scale, detail, in use, packaging, variations

KEY TAKEAWAY
Attributes and category are the only part of Etsy SEO where filling in a form reliably helps. Do that work once, properly, across the catalogue, before you spend another hour on tags.
CHAPTER 05
3 min
Shop structure, sections and the long tail
Etsy ranks listings, not shops. That single fact changes what shop structure is for: it is not an authority hierarchy, it is a browsing aid and a coverage decision.
It also means there is no shop-level equivalent of domain authority to build. A well-made listing in a shop opened last month can outrank a weak listing in a shop with ten thousand sales, which is both the most encouraging and the most demanding thing about the platform. There is nowhere to hide a bad listing.
1
One listing per distinct search, not per variation. Three colours of the same mug belong on one listing with variations. A mug and a matching coaster are two searches and two listings.
2
Use shop sections as the browsing layer. They do not rank in Etsy search, but they keep a visitor who arrived on one listing moving through the shop, which is where repeat-order value comes from.
3
Breadth beats depth for coverage. Twenty listings covering twenty distinct phrases get more impressions than five listings re-tagged twenty ways. Each listing is a separate entry into search.
4
But not padding. Near-duplicate listings compete with each other, split the behavioural signal that feeds quality score, and read as spam to shoppers comparing them side by side.
Decision
The question it answers
What gets it wrong
Variations
Same product, different colour or size?
Splitting them into separate listings that then compete
Separate listings
Would a shopper search for these differently?
Merging two real searches into one listing to save effort
Shop sections
How does a visitor browse once they arrive?
Expecting sections to rank — they are navigation, not search
Catalogue size
How many distinct phrases can we honestly cover?
Padding the shop with near-duplicates to look bigger
The first two rows are where most shops lose impressions, and both are decided before a single tag is written.
CHAPTER 06
3 min
Shipping, reviews and the service signals
The ranking inputs no seller thinks of as SEO, and the ones we most often find holding a shop back.
Etsy is unusual in letting commercial terms affect search position directly. On Google, shipping cost is a conversion factor. On Etsy it is a ranking factor, because Etsy is trying to protect the shopper experience of its own marketplace. That makes several of these the cheapest improvements available — and all of them are decisions rather than writing.
Signal
Why Etsy weighs it
What to do about it
Free shipping guarantee
Etsy promotes it to shoppers in its own marketing
Price it into the item and qualify, or model what the loss actually costs
Processing time
Delivery estimates shoppers see before they buy
Quote the time you hit every week, not your best week
Review score and count
Direct evidence of shopper satisfaction
Ask after delivery, never before. Volume matters as much as average.
Completed cases
A case opened against you is a failure Etsy had to handle
Resolve in messages before a case is opened. This is the one with teeth.
Shop completeness
Policies, About section, FAQs, shop photo
A one-hour job that most shops never finish
None of these require a keyword decision. All of them are settings, policies or habits, which is why they are the first thing we change on a shop that is already well tagged.
- Do not qualify for free shipping by accident. Work out the real postage cost by weight and destination first, then decide. Absorbing it blindly on heavy or international items is how sellers discover a negative-margin bestseller.
- Pad processing time deliberately. Dispatching early is invisible upside; dispatching late costs you a service metric and sometimes a case. Quote the honest worst case.
- Never buy reviews or offer anything for one. Etsy detects incentivised reviews and the penalty is to the shop, not the listing — the one place where shop-level damage genuinely exists.
CHAPTER 07
2 min
Etsy Ads and organic: the real relationship
Etsy Ads do not buy organic rank. They buy impressions, those impressions can buy sales, and sales feed the quality score that does affect rank. That is the entire mechanism, and it is routinely oversold in both directions.
So the honest position is in between the two claims you will read. Advertising a listing will not lift it organically by itself. Advertising a listing that converts well can lift it, because you are buying the behavioural signal faster than organic impressions would deliver it. Advertising a listing that converts badly buys you nothing and burns budget confirming the listing has a problem.
1
Fix the listing before you advertise it. Ads on a listing with a weak first photo are a fast way to pay for proof that the photo is weak.
2
Advertise your proven converters, not your slow movers. The instinct is backwards: spend where conversion already works, because that is the only spend that compounds into rank.
3
Judge ads on their own return, separately. Do not credit an ad campaign with organic lift unless you can see impressions rising on listings you did not advertise.
4
Treat Offsite Ads as a cost of sale, not a channel. Above the revenue threshold it is mandatory and the fee applies to attributed orders, so it belongs in your margin model rather than your marketing plan.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Ads accelerate a listing that already works and waste money on one that does not. Nobody can buy their way past a bad first photograph.
CHAPTER 08
3 min
Measuring Etsy SEO properly
Shop views is the wrong number. Etsy gives you impressions, visits and orders per listing, and the ratios between those three are the only diagnosis that tells you what to fix.
Read them as a funnel. Low impressions is a relevance problem: your tags, attributes and category are not getting you into the candidate set. High impressions with low visits is a click problem: photo and price. Good visits with low orders is a listing problem: description, reviews, shipping cost. Three different diagnoses, three different fixes, and almost everyone treats all three as a tag problem.
- Work in Search Analytics, per listing. It reports the queries you were shown for and your position in them. Nothing you can do by searching manually comes close.
- Change one thing and wait three weeks. Etsy needs impressions to re-score a listing. Changing all thirteen tags at once destroys your ability to attribute the result.
- Separate seasonal movement from your own work. Most Etsy categories swing hard from October to December. Compare against the same weeks last year, not last month.
- Track orders per listing, not shop revenue. Shop revenue hides the fact that four listings are carrying the shop and two hundred are inert.
EXPERT VIEW
“When a shop tells us its tags are perfect and nothing ranks, the tags usually are fine. We change the first photograph on the twenty listings with the most impressions, and the traffic problem turns out to have been a click problem all along.”

Three decisions, before and after
Real shapes of the three decisions that come up on almost every Etsy shop we take over.
TAGS
Thirteen words to thirteen phrases
Before
Tags: ring, silver, handmade, gift, jewellery, boho, dainty, stacking, minimal, chunky, women, wedding, bridal
After
Tags: chunky silver ring, stacking ring set, boho silver jewellery, handmade ring uk, dainty silver band, gift for her, bridesmaid ring, minimal silver ring, thumb ring silver, hammered silver ring, mothers day jewellery, ring for wife, sterling silver gift
Same thirteen slots. The first set competes for queries nobody types alone; the second set competes for thirteen phrases a real shopper would. This is the single most common change we make, and it is free.
TITLE
Keyword-stuffed to readable
Before
“Silver Ring Chunky Ring Stacking Ring Boho Ring Gift Ring Handmade Ring Dainty Ring Minimal Ring Statement Ring Jewellery”
After
“Chunky Hammered Silver Ring — Handmade Stacking Band, Gift for Her”
The first title ranks and then nobody clicks it, because the shopper reading the first forty characters on a phone cannot tell what the item is. The second ranks for fewer phrases and earns a far better click rate — which Etsy then rewards.
SHIPPING
Postage charged separately, or priced in
Before
Item £18, postage £4.20 at checkout. No free shipping guarantee.
After
Item £22.50, postage free. Qualifies for the guarantee.
Nearly the same landed cost, a better position in search, and a better conversion rate because the price shown is the price paid. This only works if you have done the postage arithmetic by weight and destination first — absorbed blindly on heavy or international items it creates a negative-margin bestseller.
Anonymised from Etsy shops we manage. The shapes recur; the specifics will not match your catalogue exactly.
- Take these with you
Three checklists
Written to be worked through rather than read. Nothing here needs a paid tool.
Shop foundations
Do these once, properly, before touching a single tag.
- Every listing in the deepest category that genuinely fits it
- Every attribute field filled, including the optional ones
- Shop policies, About section and shop photo complete
- Processing times set to what you hit every week, not your best week
- Postage costed by weight and destination, then a free-shipping decision made
- Search Analytics checked once to establish a baseline before you change anything
Every listing
Run this on the twenty listings with the most impressions first.
- First photo square, bright, product filling the frame, legible as a thumbnail
- All ten image slots used, including scale, detail and in-use shots
- Title readable in the first forty characters, not stuffed to 140
- All thirteen tags used, every one a two-to-four word phrase
- No duplicate or near-duplicate tags competing for the same slot
- Occasion, recipient and style covered somewhere in the tags
Monthly review
Twenty minutes, once a month.
- Impressions, visits and orders pulled per listing from Search Analytics
- Listings sorted into relevance problems, click problems and conversion problems
- One change made per listing, not thirteen
- Changes from three weeks ago reviewed before new ones are made
- Comparison against the same weeks last year, not last month
- Any case or late dispatch from the period reviewed for cause
Copy these into your own tracker. There is no download form and no email wall.
- Frameworks
Two frameworks worth keeping
The two decisions that come up repeatedly, written down so they stop being reargued.
FRAMEWORK ONE
The tag allocation table
Thirteen tags is a budget, and most shops spend it badly. Allocate the slots by intent rather than filling them with synonyms, and check each candidate against two tests: would a shopper type this phrase, and does my listing genuinely answer it?
Tag type
How many slots
Why
Product plus main attribute
3 to 4
Your core demand. Specific enough to rank, broad enough to have volume.
Occasion or recipient
3 to 4
Etsy demand is heavily gift-driven and these rarely appear in descriptions
Style or aesthetic
2 to 3
How Etsy shoppers actually browse: cottagecore, minimal, art deco
Long-tail specific
2 to 3
Low volume, low competition. Where a new shop gets its first impressions.
Single generic words
0
“Ring”, “gift”, “handmade” — a slot spent on a query you cannot win
If a tag duplicates a phrase already in your title, you have spent a slot twice. The title and tags are read together.
Applies per listing. Two listings in the same shop should not share all thirteen tags, or they compete with each other.
FRAMEWORK TWO
The Etsy SEO priority order
When everything needs work, the order matters more than the list. Each step assumes the one above it has cleared, because effort at step five is wasted while step one is wrong.
1
Category and attributes. Across the whole catalogue, once, properly. Without this the listing cannot be filtered into, whatever its tags say.
2
Shipping and processing. Postage costed, free-shipping decision made, processing times honest. Settings, not writing, and they move position directly.
3
First photographs. On the twenty listings with the most impressions. The largest single source of upside on most shops.
4
Titles. Readable in the first forty characters, carrying the two or three phrases that matter most.
5
Tags. All thirteen, allocated by the table above. This is where almost everyone starts and it belongs fifth.
6
Reviews and service record. Slow, compounding, and the only thing on this list a competitor cannot copy in an afternoon.
Etsy Ads sit outside this order entirely. Do not advertise a listing until steps one to four are done on it.
- In summary
Key takeaways: Etsy SEO tips worth keeping
Eight sentences you could hand to somebody who is not going to read the guide. Treat them as Etsy SEO tips with the reasoning stripped out — the reasoning is the part that stops you applying them to the wrong listing.
1
Etsy ranks listings, not shops. A good listing in a new shop beats a weak listing in an old one, and there is nowhere to hide a bad listing.
2
Relevance gets you into the candidate set. Listing quality score, shipping price and your service record decide where in it you land.
3
Tags are matched as whole phrases. Thirteen single generic words is the most common and most expensive mistake on the platform.
4
The first photograph does more ranking work than any tag, because click rate feeds the score that decides how often you are shown.
5
Shipping price is a ranking input, not just a conversion factor. Cost the postage properly, then decide on the free-shipping guarantee.
6
Category depth unlocks the attribute fields shoppers filter on. Filling those in is the only form-filling in Etsy SEO that reliably pays.
7
Etsy Ads do not buy rank. They buy sales, and sales feed the score that does. Fix the listing before you advertise it.
8
Read impressions, visits and orders per listing. Low impressions, low clicks and low conversion are three different problems with three different fixes.
If you want a single first action: open Search Analytics, find your twenty most-shown listings, and look at the first photograph on each one.
